Hopen is located in the sea of Barents, with
the same latitude as the southern point of Spitzbergen.
Many bears live on this island. Hopen was once one of the best hunting
grounds in Svalbard for Polar bears.
During the last war, a German metorological station was established
in Husdalen (House valley) on Hopen. This weather station
is now maintened by Norway, with a staff of 4 persons responsible
for the radio station.
