Kong Karls Land is a part of the North East
Svalbard Nature Reserve.
This small archipelago is the most important denning and cub-rearing
area for polar bears in this part of the Arctic. For this reason a
ban on traffic is imposed.
The British Thomas Edge discovered the Kong Karls Islands in 1617
and named as Wiches Land. In late 1859 the both walers Erik Eriken
and Elling Carlsen re-discovered the islands.
