Hopen
is located in the sea of Barents, with the same latitude as the southern
point of Spitsbergen. This island is 33 km
long and 1,5-2 km wide. Many bears live on this island.
Hopen Island rises out of the sea from the plateau which extends
from Bear Island up towards Hopen and then across to Edgeøya.
There is a meterologic station located
on the east coast, with a staff of 4 persons responsible for the
radio station.
