Kvitøya is completely covered with ice (White
Island) excepted two small rock points.
It is in Kvitøya where disappeared the three members of the
expedition to the North Pole in balloon of Andrée in 1897.
Due to excessive icing, their balloon crashed after only three days
on the ice in North of Svalbard. Andrée, Fraenkel and Strindberg
spent nearly three months on the pack ice to finally reach Kvitøya
and set up a camp but died there.
The location of their camp was found by chance
by a fishing vessel in 1930, some 33 years
after the expedition was declared missing.
