Kvitoya is completely covered with ice (White
Island) excepted two small rock points.
Kvitoya is situated only 98 km from Victoria Island in Franz Joseph
Land, which is part of Arctic Russia. The distance from Kvitoya to
Nordaustlandet is 117 km.
It is in Kvitoya where disappeared, after a long walk on the ices,
the three members of expedition to the North Pole in balloon of Andrée
in 1897. The bodies of Andrée, Fraenkel and Strindberg were
found only 33 years later by a fishing vessel.
